The Bharatiya Janata Party on Sunday filed a compliant with the Election Commission against Congress president Sonia Gandhi [Images], saying her speech at one of the election rallies violated the model code of conduct.
"We have submitted a complaint to the Election Commission against Sonia Gandhi," general secretary of the Gujarat unit of BJP, Jayanti Barot, said in a statement.
"Sonia, through her speech at Chikli in Navsari district, had tried to divide people on caste lines and arouse religious sentiment before the elections. She had also levelled baseless allegations against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi [Images]," Barot said.
The UPA chairperson had said in Navsari "those ruling Gujarat are "dishonest" and "merchant of deaths".
Barot said the BJP has requested the commission to take immediate steps on the party's complaint. The two-phased Gujarat Assembly elections will be held on December 11 and 16.
