The Calcutta High Court on Monday granted bail to 14 members of the 'Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee', who are alleged to have attacked the police on March 14 at Nandigram during police action.

A division bench of Justices D P Sengupta and S P Mitra granted bail to Mahadev Bhuinya and 13 others who were accused of attacking the police with firearms, country-made bombs and also charged with attempt to murder.

The 14 were in jail custody and their bail prayers were rejected twice earlier by additional chief judicial magistrate of Haldia, who had directed that they remain in custody till April 13.

Challenging the remand, all the accused had moved the high court seeking bail.

Fourteen persons were killed during police action at Nandigram in West Bengal's East Midnapore district.
