Uttaranchal Chief Minister Narain Dutt Tiwari has promised relief for local activists who had threatened to stage a demonstration before Congress chief Sonia Gandhi [Images] and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] protesting against government apathy towards their long pending demand for employment.

The activists had fought for the establishment of the hill state.

Tiwari detailed Nainital Commissioner Rakesh Sharma to negotiate with the demonstrators who were already sitting on an indefinite fast for four days.

Later Friday night, Sharma personally called on the demonstrators and agreed to meet their demand.

Agitating under the banner of Uttrakhand Andolankari Sangharsh Samiti, the activists claimed that while many of the Uttrakhand movement activists had been duly employed by the government, a few had been left out on account of certain technical factors.

"We are glad that the government has decided to remove these lacunae and extend the facility to all those who had been jailed for at least seven days or had suffered grievous injuries during the agitations in pursuance of our demand for an independent state," Samiti chief Lalit Mohan Joshi said.

Joshi said, "Our agitation has been called off ."
