The Centre is expecting a report from Maharashtra on the Malegaon blasts by Wednesday as security personnel probing the incident have picked up a number of persons, a senior Home Ministry official said in New Delhi on Tuesday.

A number of persons are being questioned and the security establishment in Delhi is awaiting a report on the identification of the group likely to be involved in the blasts, he said.

"We are expecting the report by tomorrow," he said evading questions as to who could be responsible for the act or whether the incident had any linkages with the Mumbai blasts in July 2006.

"The investigation into the Malegaon blasts is moving in the right direction and we hope to solve it soon," he said.

The Centre was awaiting the report of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory on the type of explosives used to trigger the blasts in Malegaon that left 31 people dead and nearly 300 injured.

However, the police have said the explosive devices used in Friday's attacks contained a mixture of RDX, ammonium nitrate and fuel oil.
