A 28-year-old doctor was arrested in Malegaon near Nasik early on Monday for allegedly assisting the Lashkar-e-Tayiba militants from whose possession a huge cache of arms was seized, police said.

The accused, identified as Sharif Mohamed Shabbir Ahmed, is said to be an activist of the banned Student Islamic Movement of India.

Police are likely to interrogate Ahmed, a resident of Sapana Sizing in Malegaon, in connection with the car that was used by the militants on May 9 at Aurangabad. The militants escaped in the car when the police intercepted them.

A diary and a mobile phone have also been seized from his possession, the police said.

The car was found abandoned in Sayne-Shivar at Malegaon on Friday and police arrested four persons � Riyaj Ahmed Mohamed Ramjan (36), Mushtaq Ahmed Mohamed Isaac (25), Javid Ahmed Abdul Maji (28) and Afjal Khan Nabi Khan (26) -- in this connection.

Earlier, around 2330 IST on Sunday the police and Anti-Terrorist Squad officials seized six boxes, containing five AK 47 rifles, 20 magazines, 13 kg RDX, and one thousand live cartridges in an electrical shop in Nasik.
