In a veiled warning, the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday asked the Central government whether it wanted the Finance Bill and Budget to be passed in Parliament or disrupt the proceedings to save the guilty in the Godhra train fire case by raking up the Banerjee Committee report.

"We condemn the disruption of Parliamentary proceedings by parliamentarians of the ruling coalition, who are being provoked both by United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi [Images] and Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad for the sake of minority votes in the coming assembly elections," BJP Parliamentary Party Spokesman V K Malhotra told reporters in New Delhi.

He said an hour-long meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Party, chaired by Leader of Opposition L K Advani, decided to inform the presiding officers of both the Houses that the behaviour of the treasury benches was disgraceful and that the opposition would counter it.

"We want to know whether this Government wants to pass the Finance Bill and the Budget. We are going to aggressively respond to their disruption. This government wants to save the guilty behind the killing of 57 people in the Godhra train carnage for the sake of minority votes in the coming elections," he said.

The U C Banerjee Committee Report, which described the train fire as an accident, was made public with an eye on the polls, he said, adding that it was made public in violation of a commitment given to the Gujarat High Court and despite the incidents being probed by the Nanavati Commission and the Supreme Court overseeing court trials.
