Three Tamil Tiger rebels were killed in an attack launched by a rival faction in the embattled east of Sri Lanka [Images] on Tuesday, the military said.

The faction led by V Muralitharan, better known as Colonel Karuna, launched an attack on the main Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam group at Kirimitchchiya early on Tuesday.

The report came a day after the government held the Tigers responsible for the assassination of army general Parami Kulatunga, the number three officer in the Sri Lanka army.

Following Monday's killing, the government announced further tightening the already tight security arrangements in the country.
