The United Nations has said it is awaiting a formal invitation from the Nepal government to engage in the country's fledgling peace process.

Reaffirming the UN's willingness to support Nepal's ongoing efforts to restore permanent peace, Resident UN Coordinator Matthew Kahane asked the government to officially invite the world body for monitoring the ceasfire with the rebels.

The Nepal Crisis

Nepal government has said it would seek UN's engagement in decommissioning arms of the Maoists besides monitoring the ceasefire. Kahane said at a function in Kathmandu on Sunday that the conflicting parties have a major role to play in the peace process.

He stressed that outsiders need not intervene in the matter if parties to the conflict could settle the longstanding conflict on their own.
