Thousands of followers of Dr B R Ambedkar congregated at 'Chaityabhoomi' near Shivaji Park in Mumbai on Wednesday to pay homage to the Dalit icon on his 50th death anniversary amidst tight security against the backdrop of violent protests against vandalisation of his statue.

People stood in long queues since early morning on the road leading to 'Chaityabhoomi' where Ambedkar was cremated.

Security was enhanced with the deployment of Border Security Force, Rapid Action Force, Riot Control Police and Central Reserve Police Force in the area.

The day also coincides with the 16th anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition as well the annual Urs of Baba Maqdoomi Dargah at Mahim, also in central Mumbai, putting additional pressure on the government machinery to maintain law and order.

The government has declared a holiday for schools and colleges today and some private companies and commercial establishments are also closed.

There was less traffic on city roads and vehicles were diverted off main roads in central Mumbai to avoid snarls around Shivaji Park.
