For those who have no one, there's Vidyakar

August 14, 2006
For Salma from Bihar, who was picked up along with her two children 12 years ago, Vidyakar is her 'bhai'. Her children look up to him as their 'father.' When Salma knows only Hindi, the children can speak only Tamil.

"What can we say about Papa? He is the one who gave us life. Otherwise, we would have died on the streets," says Ahmed Ali, 16.

"He is our Papa, Amma, God... everything," adds 17-year-old Chrisa.

After finishing their 10th standard, they are now doing a year's volunteer work at Udavum Karangal which is compulsory for all children who finish Class 10.
