Locals in a western Nepal town have sealed a border entry point and restricted movement of people and vehicles for the past four days to protest against alleged misconduct by Indian policemen.

The Indian security personnel are alleged to have misbehaved with local Nepalese and made some objectionable remarks at the Gauriphanta entry point in Dhangadhi municipality, the National News Agency (RSS) reported on Wednesday.

After the incident, shoppers going to the Indian side have been stopped from moving across the border and Nepalese returning home after buying essential goods in Indian markets have been barred from entering, the report says.

All business activities in the Gauriphanta Bazaar in the border area have come to a standstill following the incident.

There is shortage of petroleum products, cement and other essential goods in the area as trucks carrying goods were barred from entering Nepal. The protestors have been demanding transfer of Indian customs officials who have reportedly mistreated local Nepalese in the area.

The district magistrate of Khiri district in India has been approached for resolving the dispute through telephonic conversations, but the matter is yet to be resolved despite his positive assurances, Nepalese officials said.
