The dreaded Japanese Encephalitis continued to take its toll in eastern Uttar Pradesh claiming eight more lives on Monday taking the number of deaths reported so far to 585. As many as 57 cases were admitted in BRD Medical College and other hospitals spread across seven districts from where the eight deaths were reported, health department sources said.

500 patients are still under treatment across various hospitals in the region, sources said. Officials said fogging in the rural as well as urban areas continues. People are being advised to keep mosquitoes at bay by using mosquito nets and other measures. Free distribution of mosquito nets sprayed with insecticides is also on. A specific type of mosquito, Culex trita eniorhynchus, according to experts, is responsible for transmitting the disease to humans from pigs, which is the primary host of the Encephalitis virus.
