Taking suo-motu cognizance of the police firing in Meghalaya in which nine students were killed, the National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday directed the state government to comment on the incident within four weeks.

The National Human Rights Commission issued the directions on the basis of media reports about the firing in Tura and Williamnagar on September 30, a statement issued by it said.

"If the contents of the reports are true, it raises serious issues of violation of human rights of citizens," the commission said directing the state chief secretary to comment on the incident within four weeks.

Police had fired on students protesting the proposed shifting of the headquarters of the Meghalaya Board of Secondary Education from Tura to Shillong.
