An alert was sounded throughout Meghalaya for an Al-Qaeda [Images] suspect who is believed to have sneaked into the state from Bangaldesh through Assam.

"We have sounded an alert in entire state for Habib Tanbir but no breakthrough has been achieved so far," Director General of Police W R Marbaninag told PTI in Shillong on Monday.

The DGP said police had taken this step after getting information from outside sources. He, however, refused to confirm Tanbir having links with the Al-Qaeda network.

However, intelligence inputs suspected him to be an Al-Qaeda link who sneaked into the country a month ago from Bangaldesh via Goalpara district of Assam to "carry out a specific operation". Tanbir's two photographs - one a clean-shaven and another sporting beard - were circulated and pasted in almost all police stations in Meghalaya to help security men nab him.
