A man who tried to hijack a long-distance bus in China's northwest using dynamite was shot to death by police, a news report said Thursday.
The man, identified as Zhang Baoguo, boarded the bus on Wednesday afternoon at a filling station in the city of Yining and threatened to blow it up, the official Xinhua News Agency said.
When police arrived, Zhang lit the fuse on the dynamite, causing a fire on the bus, Xinhua said.
"To protect the safety of other passengers and the filling station, police shot dead the man," Xinhua said. It said investigators concluded Zhang's hijacking attempt was motivated by a family dispute but didn't give any details.
The report didn't provide details on the fire or say whether anyone else was injured.
