Two mild earthquakes rattled parts of India on Tuesday evening -- one epicentered in Thane near Mumbai and the other on the Nagaland-Myanmar border in the north-east.

No major loss of property was reported apart from stray cases of wall collapses.

The two quakes were separated by a little over 40 minutes -- while tremors in Thane were felt at 1746 IST, the earth shook in Nagaland at 1707 IST.

While the quake epicentered in Thane measured 3.7 on the Richter scale, the one in Nagaland measured 4.7.

The tremors in Thane and its neighbourhood -- Ambernath, Dombivli and Navi Mumbai -- were strong enough to send the residents running out of their houses.

rediff.com staffer Jestin George, who called from Ambernath, said: "My building shook...and it lasted some time."

Neeraj, a resident of Dombivli, said walls in his bathroom collapsed.

An employee of Reliance [Get Quote] Infocomm in Navi Mumbai said a lot of people in her office felt the tremors. "We felt the tremors but thought it could be vibrations caused by somebody moving some heavy machines on the floor above. But soon the entire campus [Dhirubhani Ambani Knowledge City] was buzzing," she said.
