The police have filed a case against sepoy Suraj Singh Negi for allegedly murdering a washerman in the Indian Military Academy premises, and are trying to secure a transit warrant to bring the soldier to Dehradun.

"We have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 302 (murder) and 420 (cheating)," Garhwal range Deputy Inspector General of Police R S Meena said on Thursday.

Meena said Negi was wanted in connection with the alleged killing of a washerman, Kalua, in the IMA premises on December 10, 2003, and that the Uttaranchal Police will secure a warrant from a court to bring him under transit remand from Bhatinda.

The soldier was arrested in Bhatinda on July 8 for alleged 'spying activities' after he started asking questions about the families of Kargil [Images] martyrs and aroused suspicions.

The police are now looking for his girlfriend, Renu, for pointers regarding Negi's activities after his disappearance.

They have raided several places the two used to frequent and the Himachal Pradesh [Images] police was also on the look-out for her.

Negi was presumed dead after a charred body, now believed to be that of Kalua, was found in the IMA premises, but he surfaced at Bhatinda on July 7.

His 'widow' has been drawing the family pension and his father was bringing his three children in the Vikas Nagar locality of Dehradun.
