The Chhattisgarh government plans to adopt two tsunami-affected villages in Tamil Nadu for relief and rehabilitation works, Chief Minister Raman Singh said on Monday.

The state government will take up reconstruction of houses and provide basic needs, like hospital, school and community centres, in the villages it proposes to adopt, he told reporters in Chennai.

He said Chhattisgarh Chief Secretary Vijay Varghese would be in touch with his Tamil Nadu counterpart Lakshmi Pranesh regarding the villages to be adopted and aid for relief works.

Chhattisgarh had adopted a village in Gujarat after the earthquake, and the state's Public Works Department and Housing Board had executed reconstruction works there.

Singh, who met his Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and discussed with her matters relating to tsunami-affected areas, relief and rehabilitation, said she had sought items like bamboos and logs (Balia) from Chhattisgarh.

He said his state had announced an emergency relief worth Rs seven crore. A train carrying 23,447 quintals of rice for the affected people worth Rs 2.30 crore would arrive in Chennai soon, he said.
