Forty Shiv Sainiks were arrested on Monday in Indore in Madhya Pradesh for trying to disrupt Valentine's Day celebrations.

"Forty Shiv Sainiks were arrested in Annapurna area of the city when the Shiv Sainiks started targeting shops [selling greeting cards and gifts]," said District Superintendent of Police Adarsh Katiyar.

Valentine's Day celebrations in most parts of Madhya Pradesh remained subdued.

Restaurants and hotels did not hold any Valentine's Day programmes, especially in Bhopal, Katiyar said.

"Since there weren't any public celebrations, the day passed off peacefully," said Ashutosh Mishra, a Bajrang Sena leader.

Bajrang Sena had also called for a boycott of Valentine's Day celebrations.
