India to develop tsunami warning system in 2 years

April 29, 2005 15:42 IST

India will have its tsunami warning system in place in little over two years, Department of Science and Technology secretary Dr V S Ramamurthy said.

DST is working closely with Department of Ocean Development and Department of Space to achieve this goal, Ramamurthy said in New Delhi on Thursday.

DST is also in the process of boosting earthquake detection through its India Meteorological Department network so that the Union Home Ministry gets a warning within ten minutes of a major earthquake in the Indian Ocean.

"Unlike the December 26, 2005 tsunami, on March 28 when an earthquake hit Sumatra we could predict a possible tsunami within 35 minutes with the help of other world agencies. But we would like to do the prediction within 10 minutes once the DOD's instrumentation is in place," he said.

"The necessary instrumentation will be installed by DOD within two years. The government has already sanctioned Rs 1,250 mn for the purpose," he said.
