In the continuing protests against the April 21 rape of a teenager allegedly by a police constable inside a police post at Marine Drive, students, parents and teachers carried out a symbolic 'last rites' of 'law and order' in the metropolis.

Students, parents and teachers gathered in large numbers at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai on Monday and demanded action against officials for allowing elements like dismissed constable Sunil More to find a place in the police ranks.

"We mourn the 'demise' of the law and order in city and condole the 'death' of our faith in the biggest law enforcer
in the city," they said.

People opined that transfer of senior officials was not a solution to this problem. Action needs to be taken against officials of higher ranks for "failing to maintain discipline and responsibility in the force and the hierarchy," they said.

A memorandum demanding action against senior officials and 'condolence messages' were submitted to Commissioner of Police A N Roy after the congregation performed symbolic 'last rites' of the law and order situation at Marine Drive.
