No power in Kolkata hospital, 4 infants dead

September 27, 2004 17:50 IST

Four infants died in the state-run B C Roy Memorial Hospital for Children in Kolkata, West Bengal, early Monday when power supply was snapped for over two hours.

The four, in the age group of seven to 22 days, died in Ward 7 after power supply to the incubators got snapped, hospital sources said.

Medical Superintendent Mrinal Chatterjee, however, confirmed the death of one infant and blamed the power utility CESC Ltd for the delay in restoring supply.

Angry relatives and some local people staged a protest demonstration in front of the hospital.

Police arrived at the scene, chased away the demonstrators and detained two persons, who were later let off.

The aggrieved relatives also faxed a memorandum to state Health Minister Surjyakanta Mishra demanding an inquiry into the matter.
