The Mumbai police have hauled up IPS officer Deepak Pandey, aide-de-camp (ADC) to Maharashtra Governor Mohammad Fazal, for harassing a traffic constable, police sources said on Tuesday.

The traffic constable had stopped Pandey at Mahim in central Mumbai on October 1 when he was reportedly found using a cell phone while driving a car. Pandey reprimanded the constable for not revealing the name of his superior and asked him to report at Raj Bhawan the next day.

The ADC made him stand on the Raj Bhawan lawns for several hours. Finally, the constable collapsed and had to be hospitalised.

Mumbai police chief A N Roy ordered an inquiry by Joint Police Commissioner (traffic) S C Mathur.

When contacted, Mathur refused to comment saying his report is confidential. Roy too declined to divulge the contents of the report or comment on whether Pandey was found guilty of harassing the cop.

"The report has been sent to the state police chief," Roy told PTI.

However, sources said the report has hauled up Pandey for high-handedness and suggested disciplinary action against him. It would be forwarded to the state government, which alone is empowered to take action against officers of central services, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Pandey is also facing a police inquiry after his wife complained of mental and physical harassment for dowry.

The State Women's Commission, which is probing charges of torture against Pandey on a complaint by his IAS wife, Nidhi Pandey, has reportedly dashed a letter to the state government seeking his transfer out of Mumbai.

Nidhi, an IAS officer working as deputy CEO in the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) had lodged a complaint before the commission.

SWC member Usha Darade revealed that the commission has sent a confidential letter to the state government but refused to divulge the contents.

"I cannot comment since the commission is conducting an inquiry into the matter and any disclosure could vitiate the atmosphere," she told PTI.

An IGP-level officer is also conducting an independent inquiry into Nidhi's charges after she lodged a complaint against her husband with state Director General of Police K K Kashyap earlier in October.
