Zaheera's elder brother recants as well

November 19, 2004 16:06 IST

The sixth witness in the Best Bakery case, Nafitullah Sheikh, on Friday turned hostile in a special court in Mumbai and refused to support the prosecution.

Deposing before Special Judge Abhay Thipse, Nafitullah, the elder brother of prime witness Zaheera Sheikh, disowned his police statement and said it had not been correctly recorded.

Nafitullah told the court that he did not see anything on the day when the bakery was set afire. He also said he was not aware "how people died in the mishap that took place".

He further said he would not be able to recognise any accused.

Prosecutor Manjula Rao then sought the court's permission to cross-examine him.

On Thursday his brother, Nasibullah, had also not recognised any of the accused and retracted his police statement.
