Two more Vidarbha farmers commit suicide
July 14, 2004 14:08 IST
Two more farmers from the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra have committed suicide in the last two days, taking the number of such deaths to over 15.
The farmers were apparently driven to death by crop failures due to insufficient rain in the region.
Ramchandra Premchandra Chavan, 36, from Pusad taluka of Yavatmal district hanged himself to death on Tuesday, according to reports reaching Nagpur.
Chavan had taken a bank loan of Rs 20,000 and borrowed another Rs 7,000 from a co-operative society, but his soya crop was damaged due to inadequate rainfall.
Gangadhar Namdeo Ambhure, 27 from Narkhed taluka in Nagpur district ended life by consuming insecticides on Monday, the reports said.
The government has, however, not yet officially accepted that these suicides are linked to the lack of rains in the area.
