Superintendent arrested in jailbreak case

The Chandigarh police on Friday arrested the superintendent of the high-security Burail Jail in connection with Thursday night's jailbreak, Inspector General of Police Rajesh Kumar said.
Jagtar Singh Hawara, a Babbar Khalsa International terrorist and his associates Jagtar Singh Tara and Paramjit Singh, all three accused in the murder for former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, escaped after digging a tunnel in the jail.
An undertrial, Devi Singh, also escaped.
"Jail Superintendent D S Rana, who was initially made the complainant in the case, and Assistant Superintendent P S Rana have been arrested," he said.
Seven officials, including two CRPF constables, who were on duty on the watch tower near the exit of the tunnel have also been arrested.
The Chandigarh administration has announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh to anyone giving information about the prisoners.
PWD engineers are being consulted to study the technical aspects vis-a-vis the 14-feet deep and 100-feet long tunnel that the prisoners dug, police sources said.
