Australian team donates prize money for relief

December 29, 2004 13:39 IST

In a heartwarming gesture, cricketers of the Australian team have decided to donate the prize money from the Boxing Day Test match against Pakistan, which they won, towards relief for those affected by the tsunamis that lashed many Asian countries, including India.

Over 60,000 people are reported killed in the catastrophe, with the Indian toll being over 9,000.

The prize money of about $ 13,000 will be followed by more amounts to be raised by the team, captain Ricky Ponting told reporters on Wednesday after the match.

He said the team is planning many events to raise funds to help those affected by the devastation.
