December 08, 2004 17:44 IST

On his first visit to Kargil, President A P J Abdul Kalam on Wednesday appreciated the role played by the jawans in guarding the Line of Control.

"By protecting our borders, you have allowed us to focus on developmental works in the country," the President said addressing the army's 14 Corps in Kargil during a one-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

Kalam sought to boost the morale of the troops saying, "You are here on an important mission and you have been entrusted with ensuring the security of the nation. I want to assure you that you live in every Indian heart." He said the government is acquiring the latest weapons and equipment for army units, especially those posted in border areas like Kargil.

"I congratulate you for the victory in Kargil, which is a reflection of courage and bravery. Kargil is an important part of our country and I am proud of your morale and deeds," he said.
