A special court in Mumbai on Monday summoned Sub-Inspector Daya Nayak to appear in person on December 15 to reply to allegations of obtaining funds from the underworld to construct a school in his native place of Karnataka.

Judge A P Bhangale issued the summons on a private complaint filed by former journalist Ketan Tirodkar alleging that Nayak had links with gangster Chhota Shakeel and that money obtained from the underworld was used to build a school in Karnataka.

Nayak came into the limelight after killing more than 80 gangsters in encounters.

Following allegations made by Tirodkar, he was shunted from the crime branch to a local police station in suburban Dahisar.

Hearing Tirodkar's complaint, the court came to the conclusion that a presumption arose under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act that Nayak's unaccountable assets belonged to the underworld, unless he showed the source of the funds used to construct the school.

The court observed that it was competent to try offences under MCOCA or any other Act and directed the registrar to issue summons to Nayak.
