'Muslim cops could have curbed riots'

August 17, 2004 15:57 IST

Former director general of the Gujarat police, K Chakravarthy, on Tuesday said posting Muslim policemen at sensitive areas could have curbed the post-Godhra riots.

"I did feel posting Muslim police officers in communally sensitive areas could have curbed the riots and I had also conveyed this suggestion to the home department during a meeting," he told Justice G T Nanavati and Justice K G Shah, of the two-man inquiry commission probing the riots.

"However, I am not sure whether this suggestion was considered by the state government," Chakravarthy said during his cross-examination.

The former DGP had on Monday said that he was not consulted on many important decisions like slapping the Prevention of Terrorism Act on the Godhra carnage accused, transfers of several senior police officials or transfer of officials investigating the Godhra carnage.
