TDP to sever ties if BJP reverts to Hindutva

August 01, 2004 21:53 IST

After the Janata Dal (United), another Bharatiya Janata Party ally Telugu Desam Party on Sunday said it would to snap ties with the saffron party if it followed the 'communal' route.

"The Hindutva issue is being debated at the ongoing BJP meet in Goa and if the party chose to adopt the communal route, TDP will sever ties with it to win back the popular vote," TDP spokesman Umareddy Venkateshwarlu told reporters in Hyderabad.

TDP, which extended issue-based support all along to the Vajpayee government, had contested the April-May Lok Sabha elections jointly with BJP in the state, which saw a debacle for both the parties.

The TDP won only 46 assembly and five Lok Sabha seats while the BJP could manage only two assembly seats.
