September 22, 2003 23:37 IST

The Congress on Monday bagged two Rajya Sabha seats when its nominees were declared elected unopposed to the Upper House from Chhattisgarh and Pondicherry.

The deadline for withdrawal of nominations was Monday evening.

With no other contestants in the fray, V Narayanaswamy was elected from the lone seat in the Union Territory of Pondicherry and Kamla Manhar from the solitary seat in Chhattisgarh.

This is the third time Narayanaswamy has been elected to the Upper House. He was member for two consecutive terms from 1985 to 1997. He will take the place of DMK's C P Tirunavukarasu, whose term ends on October six.

The Rajya Sabha poll in Chhattisgarh was necessitated by the death of Bhagat Ram Manhar on June 19 last.
