13 rearrested in Best Bakery case

October 09, 2003 20:07 IST

Thirteen of the twenty-one people acquitted in the Best Bakery case by a fast-track court were rearrested in Vadodara on Thursday after the Gujarat high court issued warrants against them last week, officials sources said.

They were produced before the court, which released them on bail on a surety of Rs 10,000 each, Police Commissioner S K Sinha said.

Chastised by the Supreme Court for filing an "eyewash" appeal against the trial court verdict, the Gujarat government had on September 29 filed an amended criminal petition in the HC seeking retrial of the 21 acquitted people.

Officials said the remaining eight would also be rearrested as per the HC directive.

The acquittals had led to widespread protests and the key witness, Zaheera Sheikh, had demanded a retrial outside Gujarat, prompting the SC to pass strictures against the state government.
