No firing incident was reported from anywhere along the 1126-km India-Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir after the ceasefire between the two armies came into force midnight.

"No incident has been reported from anywhere along the 778-km Line of Control, 198-km International Border and 150-km stretch of the Actual Ground Position Line in Siachen," an army spokesman said in Delhi on Wednesday.

He said army had been told not to target Pakistani troops even if there were attempts by militants to cross the border.

However, there would be no let up in anti-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir, the spokesman added.

India and Pakistan had on Tuesday evening agreed on a ceasefire, coinciding with Eid festival, in the first formal truce between the two armies since the outbreak of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.

Meanwhile, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali exhorted their countrymen to shun sectarianism and extremism.

"I hope that the nation would not only keep its distance from the menace of sectarianism but would also assist the government in its eradication," Musharraf said. "Let us celebrate the day of Eid together and unitedly."

"On the occasion of Eid, the need is to rejuvenate the promise that we will continue to struggle for mutual affinity and unity among ourselves. Also, the efforts to shun the sectarianism and differences will be our top priority," Jamali said.
