The decision to hand over the probe to the CBI was taken after a meeting between Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi and Chief Secretary K A H Subramaniam, official sources said on Monday night.

The attacks on railway passengers of Assam and the Northeast travelling through Bihar on November 11 and 12 were in reprisal to attacks on Bihari students appearing for a Railway Recruitment Board examination in Guwahati on November 9.

Assam Chief Secretary J P Rajkhowa had earlier in the day asked Subramaniam to immediately institute a CBI or judicial inquiry into the attacks.
