Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee said India and Russia on Wednesday discussed developments of concern "in our common neighbourhood" and agreed to cooperate in tackling the problem of terrorism both in bilateral and global fora.

"We have agreed on some cyber projects and on defence cooperation. We have agreed on cooperation in combating terrorism both in bilateral and global fora," Vajpayee said in a statement with Russian President Vladimir Putin by his side after their two-hour summit meeting at the Kremlin.

Putin said among the most dangerous threat in modern times is the threat of terrorism combined with drug trafficking, organised crime and other problems.

He said the views of the two countries coincided on majority of international problems.

He welcomed the prime minister's new initiative on improving relations with Pakistan.

The two leaders had one-on-one discussions followed by delegation level talks and signed a Joint Declaration on Global Challenges and Threats to International Security.

Referring to the joint working group, the prime minister said "in this context we discussed developments of concern in our common neighbourhood."

He said his talks with Putin covered cooperation in various sectors like science and technology, civil aviation and business and trade.

Vajpayee said there is a need for promoting interaction between the people of the two countries by raising frequency of flights.

He said India looked forward to early opening of Indian joint ventures in Russia.

Putin said the two countries are unanimous in their opinion that resolution of problems could only be done through a coordinated action of the United Nations.

The Russian leader said Vajpayee and he discussed bilateral cooperation and the process of implementation of a number of projects in science and technology, military technology and areas of future cooperation.

Putin stressed the importance of the growing role of the private sector in economic ties and the need for enhancing
cultural exchanges between the two countries.
