Viramgam peaceful, curfew relaxed for 90 minutes

No untoward incident was reported on Monday during a 90-minute relaxation in curfew in Viramgam town of Ahmedabad district, where three persons were killed and 40 injured in communal clashes on Sunday.

Only women were allowed to step out on the streets when the curfew was relaxed to purchase essential commodities, senior district officials said.
 
"Curfew was relaxed between 1400 IST and and 1530 IST," Ahmedabad District Collector Anit Karwal said.

Karwal said there was no shortage of essential commodities in any part of the town. "The situation is peaceful at present and the town is slowly limping back to normalcy," she said.

Three men were killed in police and private firing in Viramgam when two communities clashed on Sunday.

Police have arrested 24 people, including an ex-municipal councillor.

At least 12 shops were torched and ransacked by rioting mobs.
