NHRC deadline for J&K govt on missing persons
May 14, 2003 14:45 IST
The National Human Rights Commission took a serious note on missing persons in Jammu and Kashmir and set a deadline of six weeks for the state government to furnish information on the system established to address it and steps taken so far.
More than 8,000 people have disappeared so far from the state, the Association of the Parents of Disappeared Persons said.
The commission, headed by A S Anand, asked the government to inform whether it has established a system to record allegations of enforced or involuntary disappearances.
The state has to explain the system, the number of such allegations recorded by it and results of such investigations if any. It also has to list measures to prevent such disappearances and steps taken to book those who may have been involved in such cases.
