No deputy CM in Himachal
cabinet: Virbhadra Singh

March 05, 2003 23:11 IST

Virbhadra Singh, who will be sworn-in as the new chief minister of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, indicated he will not have a deputy but said state Congress chief Vidya Stokes' name figures in the list of ministers proposed to the party high command.

"She (Stokes) certainly figures in the list of ministers proposed to the high command," Singh told reporters on Wednesday shortly before he was to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi in Delhi to discuss composition of his ministry.

The high command would decide on a new PCC president in the event of Stokes becoming a minister, he said adding the cabinet would initially be a two-tier one and as small as possible.

Singh, who had earlier been chief minister for 13 years spread over three terms, said his government's immediate priorities would be to provide a clean and responsive administration, inquiry into various scams of the Dhumal government and tackling the problem of unemployment.

The charges against Dhumal and his government 'date much before the just concluded assembly elections and even some BJP ministers and MLAs had pointed fingers at him'.

"We will thoroughly investigate each and every case of corruption and proceed as per the law," he said.

"We will proceed on solid facts, which can be proved in the court of law," he said adding 'we have no intention of witch hunting'.
