13 soldiers killed as militants attack army camp

At  least 13 armymen were killed in a suicide attack by two militants on an army camp at Saujiwan on the outskirts of Jammu city on Saturday morning.

Seven armymen who received serious injuries in the fierce gunfight, which went for on for four hours, were admitted to a hospital.

The two suicide attackers forced their entry inside the camp around 0500 hours IST hurling grenades and firing from their assault rifles.

They killed two soldiers manning the sentry post and later went inside the camp.

"They hurled grenades and fired indiscriminately from their automatic weapons on the soldiers," said a police officer in Jammu.

The quick reaction team of the army immediately reacted and engaged the militants in a fierce encounter. Senior army and police officers also reached the spot immediately along with reinforcements.

The soldiers gunned down one fidayeen while the other continued to fire on the soldiers. He was later shot dead by the security forces after nearly four hours.

Out of the 13 soldiers killed, one was a Junior Commissioned Officer.
