June 12, 2003 20:58 IST
Army Chief Gen Nirmal Chandra Vij will pay a seven-day goodwill visit to Moscow beginning Sunday.
His visit is a part of the ongoing process of exchange of bilateral visits aimed at enhancing existing cooperation between the armed forces of both countries.
General Vij will visit Russia from June 15-21 at the invitation of Commander-in-Chief of Russian Land Forces Colonel-General Nikolai Kormiltsev, who is also the deputy defence minister.
During his visit the chief of the army staff is scheduled to see key military training institutions, Russian Defence establishments and military industrial complexes in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Tula.
Indian and Russian Armed Forces traditionally share a warm relationship. Recent Indo-Russian joint naval war games in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are manifestations of this relationship.
A large number of Russian equipment forms a part of the Indian inventory. Russian T-90S main battle tanks are the latest acquisition by the Indian Army and many ambitious programmes for the modernisation and upgradation of Soviet-supplied hardware are in the pipeline.
