Surat police question actress Shilpa's father
June 06, 2003 21:09 IST
Surendra Shetty, father of actress Shilpa Shetty, was on Friday interrogated by the Surat police for six hours for his involvement in an extortion case.
Surendra was summoned by Umra police station as per a Gujarat high court directive. Officials refused to divulge the details of the interrogation.
In a related development, Shetty's wife and co-accused Sunanda said, "We are being falsely implicated in this case.
"However, we are cooperating with Surat police in the investigations. We also have complete trust in the judiciary," she told reporters after spending two hours inside the police station.
Sunanda said she had come here of her own free will after talking to her husband.
On June three, the court had granted him interim bail on condition that he would cooperate with the investigations and be present at the police station whenever he was summoned. He was also asked to deposit his passport.
The couple sped off after Sunanda gave a brief statement before the mediapersons outside the police station.
Police had filed a case against Surendra, Sunanda and underworld don Fazlu Rehman for allegedly extorting money from owner of Praful Sarees, Pankaj Agarwal.
According to police, Shilpa's parents had 'hired' a gangster to recover Rs 8 million payable to the actress by Agarwal for acting in an ad film.
Police claim to have in their possession recorded telephonic talks between Shilpa's parents and Agarwal, which indicate that he was threatened to settle the dues.
