Bismillah Khan to perform in Parliament on Aug 7

July 22, 2003 23:52 IST

Shehnai maestro Bismillah Khan will perform in Parliament House on August 7, Parliament sources said in Delhi on Tuesday.

The 87-year-old Bharat Ratna awardee has expressed his desire to perform in concert for Members of the Parliament without taking any honorarium, sources said.

But several MPs have objected to the idea of Ustad performing free of cost and want him to be 'suitably honoured'.

The Ustad has been in the news lately for his ill health and acute financial crisis.

As soon as the news of Ustad's financial condition was known, President A P J Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, several chief ministers and some philanthropists came forward to help him financially.
