Menon meets Pak foreign secretary
July 18, 2003 15:23 IST
In the first high-level contact between India and Pakistan after the resumption of full diplomatic ties, Indian High Commissioner-designate to Pakistan Shiv Shankar Menon met Pakistan's Foreign Secretary Riaz Khokhar on Thursday.
"It was just a courtesy call," a foreign office official said after the meeting.
Sources in the foreign office said that the Pakistani foreign secretary welcomed Menon and greeted him on his new assignment.
Menon will present his credentials to President Pervez Musharraf after he returns from his three-nation tour. Musharraf is scheduled to reach Islamabad on Saturday from Rabat. Menon crossed into Pakistan on July 15 as the two countries moved to resume full diplomatic status after an 18-month hiatus in bilateral ties.
His Pakistani counterpart, Aziz Ahmed Khan, took up his post in New Delhi at the end of last month and the two countries restored the Delhi-Lahore bus service a few days ago.
In December 2001, diplomatic and transport links were snapped between India and Pakistan after militants attacked the Indian Parliament.
