Media misinterpreting V Naidu's statement: BJP

July 03, 2003 00:20 IST

A day after stating that party president M Venkaiah Naidu will not accept any further responsibility after the 2004 Lok Sabha polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday accused the media of 'misinterpretation'.

"The statement did not mean that Naidu would step down from the post after the accomplishment of Mission 2004 (securing majority in the Lok Sabha polls). What he meant was that it was a goal to be achieved," party spokesmen Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Prakash Javadekar told reporters in Delhi.

They indicated that Naidu is likely to be confirmed as president after the organisational elections due in November this year. At present, he is the ad hoc president.

"He (President) is totally committed to seeing the party returning to power with a comfortable majority on its own and the continuance of the National Democratic Alliance experiment," a party said in a press release to mark Naidu completing one year in office.
