February 26, 2003 09:21 IST

Extremists gunned down five members of a family belonging to the backward Kushwaha caste in Arwal district of Bihar, police said on Wednesday.

Inspector General, Operation, Neelmani said that the assailants swooped on village Khadasin under Karpi police station on Tuesday night and took one Ram Kebal Mahata hostage.

When family members resisted, the extremists killed Ram Kebal, his nephew Chottan Mahata, mother, sister and sister-in-law, he said.

Senior police officials rushed to the spot and raids were being conducted to arrest the killer.
