Police foil HJM attempt
to enter Bhojshala

February 18, 2003 20:15 IST

About 100 Hindu Jagran Manch activists, including 40 women, were on Tuesday arrested in Dhar (Madhya Pradesh) amid heavy stone-pelting as police foiled their bid to enter the disputed Bhojshala-Kamal Moula mosque premises.

A large number of people had gathered near the disputed site in the morning following the HJM and Swadeshi Jagran Manch's plan to enter the Bhojshala at 1239 IST, police said.

Special task force personnel were deployed in large numbers in an around the Bhojshala with barricades erected at all entry points.

Agitated activists pelted stones at the police prompting the latter to fire teargas shells.

The city, where prohibitory orders had been clamped in view of the HJM's threat, wore a deserted look as most of
business establishments remained closed due to the tension prevailing in the area. Schools and colleges also did not
function.

The situation is tense but under control, police said.

A curfew-like atmosphere prevailed, but Dhar District Collector Sanjay Dubey clarified that the town was not under curfew.
