US army chief meets Indian services brass
February 03, 2003 21:04 IST
General Eric K Shinseki, the first US army chief to visit India, was on Monday briefed about infiltration from across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and given an overview of the security situation in the region.
Shinseki began his formal engagements with an hour-long briefing in the army operations war room after which he held a forty-minute one-to-one meeting with army chief General N C Vij.
Though army officials were tight-lipped about the meeting, sources said Shinseki was shown visuals of recent army interceptions of Pakistani mercenaries. He was also briefed about reports of interrogation of some of the captured terrorists.
The US general also held talks with the chairman, joint chiefs of staff committee, Admiral Madhvendera Singh and the vice-chief of air staff Air Marshal M MacMohan.
He also called on Defence Minister George Fernandes.
