All India Congress Committee members on Sunday resigned from their posts as also from Congress Working Committee to pave the way for party chief Sonia Gandhi to restructure both the bodies ahead of Lok Sabha polls in the wake of the electoral debacle in three states.

CWC members Ahmed Patel, Kamal Nath and Moti Lal Vora said they had submitted their resignations while others are reportedly following suit.  This is to facilitate Gandhi to make changes and chose a new team in view of the Lok Sabha polls next year.

After a marathon CWC meeting on December 7, Gandhi herself had indicated that the AICC was slated for a revamp. The meeting had analysed the causes for the reversal in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

The resignations come just days before the Pranab Mukherjee Committee, constituted to go into the debacle, is to submit its report to Gandhi for follow up action.

However, it does not appear that everyone has fallen in line. General secretaries Mohsina Kidwai and R K Dhawan said it is the prerogative of the party president to choose her team and, therefore, it was immaterial whether any CWC member or AICC office bearer formally resigns or not.

"As far as my information goes, no one has (officially) resigned. We all (CWC members) had in the last meeting authorised Gandhi that she was free to restructure the organization," Dhawan said.

There are eight general secretaries who are either elected or nominated members of the Congress Working Committee. They are Ambika Soni, Kamal Nath, Mohsina Kidwai, Nawal Kishore Sharma, Vayalar Ravi, R K Dhawan, Oscar Fernandes and Mukul Wasnik. Moti Lal Vora is the party treasurer.

Ahmed Patel, who has resigned his CWC seat, is also the political secretary to the Congress chief and in charge of party affairs in Kerala and Delhi.

Mukul Wasnik, who according to sources has resigned, is the AICC in charge of frontal organisations - Indian Youth Congress, All India Mahila Congress and National Students Union of India (NSUI).

Former Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, who was in charge of Chhattisgarh where the party suffered a defeat, is an invitee to the CWC. It is not yet known whether he too has resigned.

There is also no confirmation about Fernandes, who is the AICC member in charge of party administration.
