SP defeats Mayawati in her bastion

December 02, 2003 15:26 IST

The ruling Samajwadi Party on Tuesday wrested from the Bahujan Samaj Party two assembly seats, including one represented by the BSP chief, Mayawati, before her resignation.

By-polls for Harora and Mahsi assembly seats were held on November 30.

The SP candidates, sources said, posted comfortable victories in both constituencies over their BSP rivals. The BJP was a poor third in both contests.

In Harora, SP's Vimal Rakesh polled 84,837 votes over BSP's Jagpal, who bagged 81,143 votes.

In Mahsi, SP's Dilip Kumar Verma polled 66,875 votes, while BSP's Jamila Khatoon got only 45,534.

The Mahsi seat had fallen vacant following the death of BSP MLA, Ali Bahadur.
